Looking at cute pictures at the office may not be as distracting as you think

Most of us have been know to occasionally shirk our workload to check out the latest cute animal pictures on Facebook or Instagram but according to the latest research these diversions may actually increase productivity. According to a study conducted in Japan, looking at pictures of cute baby animals can actually increase concentration and help you complete assigned tasks in comparison to other images that you may come across online. Researchers wanted to discover if looking at cute objects could trigger positive feelings and influence their subjects behavior. 48 participants were shown different images and then asked to complete different tasks that required concentration or motor skills. They found that subjects who viewed pictures of baby animals were 10% more successful at the assigned task than those who looked at pictures of adult animals or food. “the present study shows that perceiving cuteness not only improves fine motor skills but also increases perceptual carefulness. This study provides further evidence that perceiving cuteness exerts immediate effects on cognition and behavior in a wider context than that related to caregiving or social interaction,” the study’s author’s wrote.
