Health officials in the District of Colombia announced today that the city has experienced its first West Nile death and that another local has been hospitalized because of the virus. While the numbers are about on par with recent years for Virgina, DC and Maryland it has overall been a terrible year for the West Nile Virus and many fear that it will set record numbers before the season is over. According to officials the early arrival of spring and an unusually hot summer may be behind the high number of cases. A state of emergency has been declared in Dallas, TX where they have suffered the worst of the outbreak this year. The mayor even authorized the spraying of pesticides in an attempt to get the mosquito population under control. The virus is carried by birds but when they are bitten by mosquitoes the insect are then able to transmit the virus to humans.
