CDC: Worst Year Ever for West Nile Virus

According to the Centers for Disease Control 2012 may be the worst year ever for the West Nile Virus. According to a recent statement from the CDC 1,100 people across the country have already been infected and the virus is responsible for 41 deaths. Just the last few weeks the numbers have shot up, this time last month only 25 cases had been reported and reports are coming in from every state in the US except for Hawaii, Alaska and Vermont. The largest number of cases has been reported in Dallas, Texas where the whole county has been put under a public health emergency. The mayor has even allowed the spraying of pesticides in the hopes of getting the epidemic under control. Dr Lyle R. Peterson, director of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases at the CDC said “There has never been more cases reported to us at this time of year than ever before..this will be amongst the biggest or the biggest break we’ve had in the United States.”
