If you’ve ever looked closely at the prescribing information your receive at the pharmacy, chances are you have seen at least one mention of avoiding grapefruit juice will taking your meds. Ever wonder why?
Apparently grapefruit juice is able to block a specific enzyme on the intestine walls which can actually make the levels of the medication in the blood stronger since this blockage allows the medication to move from the guy into the body. With this being said, new medical research has discovered that for some cancer medication, this can actually be a beneficial interaction.
Researchers from the University of Chicago found that a cancer drug known to only be slightly absorbed into the blood (14%) was actually enhanced when taken along with grapefruit juice which proved to be a natural way to get more medication into the system. Aside from making the medication more potent at lower levels, this also may be an important discovery that can help patients going through this type of treatment save money while being exposed to smaller amounts of actual drug.
