The Gates Foundation, established by Bill and Melinda Gates announced today that they are pledging $1 billion over the next 8 years to help improve access to contraceptives in developing countries. The philanthropic couple has long been committed to improving conditions abroad and in the past have funded vaccine research and treatment for HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. Melinda Gates made the announcement at London’s family planning summit that her foundation co-chairs with the British government. Their hope is that in increasing access to birth control that it will reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and abortions as well as reduce the number of deaths caused by childbirth. the summit was a great success raising far more than the hoped for $4.3 billion. Developing countries pledged a total of $2 billion while other countries and foundations agreed to pledge another $2.6 billion. The United Kingdom was the biggest donor with a commitment of $800 million.
